"The process of writing is like creating a game of dominoes. The first domino creates the second incident, and so forth until the end"

WHAT WE DO

YADDA Practical Cinema School is a bespoke film education program designed to demystify the barriers to entry within the film industry.

Founded in a deep love for cinema and its power of expression, our workshops focus on practical, hands-on learning as a way to provide students the confidence and knowledge to create bold, original work on their own terms.

Our classes focus on three key areas:

  • Writing

  • Directing

  • Editing

The topics we cover provide a foundation of practical skills that the students are able to immediately apply upon leaving the classroom. We will also cover career models and the realities of navigating the industry.

YADDA is the perfect place for any aspiring filmmaker looking for a start, or any emerging filmmaker looking to grow in their craft.

Taught by filmmakers

Our classes are taught by practicing filmmakers, meaning that the course material is informed by real-life experience, and remains up to date with the latest industry trends.

All the equipment

We provide all the equipment for learning; camera, tripod, lights. The editing software we learn on is industry standard (and free!). All the students need to bring to class is a notebook and an eagerness to learn.

Practical first

As much as we love dissecting cinema, we believe the best way to learn is by doing. By the end of the course the students will be able to confidently create their own work, use their new skills to find jobs in the industry,  and apply their learnings in a variety of settings.

YADDA was founded by award-winning filmmaker, writer, and educator Kalu Oji.

Working in film and television for over a decade, Kalu’s work has been supported by many of Australia's leading film institutions, including Vic Screen, Screen Australia, and SBS.

His projects have screened at major international film festivals including the BFI London Film Festival, Palm Springs ShortFest, Sydney Film Festival, and the Atlanta Film Festival, where in 2019 he was named the 'Filmmaker to Watch' .

His debut feature film Pasa Faho premiered at the 2025 Melbourne International Film Festival to sold-out audiences, before going on to screen at a number of Oscar-Qualifying festivals including the Chicago Film Festival, Glasgow Film Festival, and the Africa International Film Festival, where it was awarded Best International Feature Film.

Alongside his filmmaking practice, Kalu has developed a strong reputation as an educator. He is a sessional tutor at Melbourne University's Victorian College of the Arts and regularly runs workshops and masterclasses across various grassroots community spaces.

He is a co-founder of TEN DAYS, a production company dedicated to supporting bold, independent screen work and new creative visions.
